BIG SCORES AS BATSMEN GO BANG
It was a day of the willow in Round 2 of FTGDCA action, with a number of individual scores with the bat going a long way to setting up victories.
Peter Dunlop would be the unluckiest of the lot in Upper FTG’s win over Johnson Park. Dunlop ended his innings on 99 not out in the Kings innings of 6/225, with the visitors accounting for the Sharks during the run chase. Andrew Devenish provided a strong intent, notching 106 to set the target at 8/222 – Jay Collee with 4 wickets keeping a hold on the points.
Knox Gardens is on the board for the season following a strong showing against The Basin. Batting first, Knox Gardens reached 6/233 on the back of skipper Jarrod Butcher’s 87. Ben Carnell was the pick of the bowlers for the bears, claiming 3/41. Blake Walter (57) and Scott Vozzo (50) continued their early form during the runchase with half centuries, however Adam “Crystal” Metherall with 3/32 managed to see the visitors fall short with 9/208.
Knoxfield sent a warning to the competition following a commanding team result against Mountain Gate. Matt Train was the pick of the bats with 48* in the Knights total of 8/276. Tom Boxell and Trent Schofield - both fresh from guest stints on The Local Cricket Show on Eastern 98.1FM that morning – had just as good a performance with 43 each. In reply, Trent Fitzgerald provided resistance with 37, however wickets to Zac Wilson (4/19) and Jack Taylor (3/30) heavily restricted the Gator batsmen to 135.
Eildon Park proved too good for Upwey at Upwey Reserve. The Panthers worked hard over the innings to 6/210, Cody Morris again with a solid haul of runs with 97. In reply, Cameron Wheeler was the shining light for Upwey, this time with the bat as he knocked up 90 runs during Upwey’s total of 182.
In the final match of Round 2 in Norm Reeves Shield, Ferntree Gully continued on their roll with a win over Belgrave. Sending the visiting team in first at Wally Tew Reserve, Aaron Brunner scored his first half-century for the Magpies, well supported also by Ibrahim Jiva with 44 as Belgrave scored 6/182 in their allotment. A shaky start to the run chase with skipper Mark Teofilo dismissed with the score at 1/0, however Jayden Bradbury showed class for a well-made 62 and, along with Harrison Brown’s 47, the batsmen were able to successfully guide past the target, finishing at 7/186.
In Decoite Shield, a tipped final preview between Monbulk and Rowville provided a win for the Hawks. Jason Fraser (91*) and Brodie Emmett (84*) gave the Rowville fielders plenty of headaches on their way to 3/208 – the pair forming an unbeaten 186-run 4th wicket partnership- accounting for Rowville’s 7/207 – Louis Holmes again in the scoresheets with 71, with Alex Walker providing 49*. Craig Broekhof proved the dasher of dreams, claiming 3/54.
Lysterfield made light work of Knoxfield, with Nathan Hicks the main culprit at Carrington Reserve for the Beavers. Hicks ended the day on 75*, easily the majority of Lysterfield’s 0/100 as they chased the Knights total of 96.
Nick Bogar had a solid day with both bat and ball for FTG Footballers in their win over South Belgrave. The Club President produced 64* in the Griffins total of 7/148, then claiming 3/28 in overcoming South Belgrave’s 143. For South, Mark Baker provided a sound innings with 59.
Olinda is on the board for the season following victory against St. Johns Tecoma. Matthew Oates (4/33) and Peter Dean (3/20) stared with the ball as the Saints got to 173. Olinda, on the back of Dominic Woodfield’s 75, proved too much with 8/187 to claim the 6 points.
